Doors and Windows...A Unique Way to Capture Your Vacation Memories

When Todd and I travel, my eyes are constantly scanning for unique photo opportunities. While I love capturing images of common tourist sites, I’ve found that some of my favorite travel photos are comprised of doors and windows. My imagination goes wild with creating a narrative of the buildings and the people behind the doors and windows.

The next time you find yourself exploring a new city, challenge yourself to step outside your usual vacation photo subject matter to include unique and sometimes quirky doors and windows. These are a great way to capture a specific moment in time and the flavor of a location. The natural light can help you remember the time of day. The type of plants in a window box evokes the season and the scents of your trip, and the chipped paint is a reminder of a building’s history…all great ways to remember time and space!
Here are some things that I try to remember to do when we’re walking around, and I’m looking for the perfect travel memory:
Frame the door or window in your camera’s viewfinder or on your smartphone’s screen. Then, take a couple of steps backwards. This gives you some wiggle room to crop the photo for perfect framing.
Look for doors and windows surrounded by vines, adorned with flower boxes, or covered in quirky accoutrements.
Look up, look down, and look behind you…sometimes a different perspective gives you the perfect opportunity for a great shot!

Play around with saturation, cropping, and filters before sharing your holiday memories with your friends and family! Get as artsy fartsy as you’d like!
Have fun and challenge yourself to look at the world from a different perspective!
